Church History

This church was founded by a small faithful band of people becoming the first Congregational church in Saugerties, NY and only the second Congregational church between NYC and Albany, NY. The church was organized on May 16, 1853. In the same year, church trustees purchased the property where the church now stands and the cornerstone was laid. The church was completed in 1855 and Reverend S.B. Goodenow from Rhode Island was unanimously called to be its first pastor.

The church purchased a two manual tracker action pipe organ. It is housed at the front of the church.

In 1935 a fire damaged the inside of the church and the congregation had the building repaired. The church has gone through several changes and renovations over the years related to upkeep. It has been repainted several times. A "red carpet" was installed in 1970 and replaced in 2013. A ramp was added to the front entranceway. Most recently the heating system was replaced and upgraded.
