July 2021

Revelation 4:8, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

Last month I looked at this verse and how it shows God’s personality and what it means to those who believe in and trust in him. As I kept looking at this scripture I saw it can also describe our life before God, God’s offering to mankind and our ultimate condition with God in our lives. To see all this we need to look at this verse from a different angle; holy, holy, holy seen as holey, wholly, holy.

Holey; leaky and porous, without God we are like this. We are full of holes, holes in our spirit where the deceiver can attack, holes in our lives where our sin lives and festers. We are seen as incomplete by the Holy Spirit. Our lives are full of holes, full of those areas where we go against God, where we let earthly desires lead us and direct our actions.

Holy; we saw last month that holy means to be set apart or blameless. In his mercy and because of his indescribable love for us, God has paid the price for those things we do that put holes in our spirit. The perfect life of Jesus was sacrificed on the cross as the punishment for our transgressions. His body was beaten and broken as he endured the wrath of God in our place. The perfect blood of God in the person of Jesus was spilled at the cross, only this perfect blood could seal the new covenant of grace between God and men for eternity.

By our faith in the crucified Jesus and his resurrection we are redeemed, we are glorified, we are washed clean of sin and seen as perfect and blameless by God as Jesus himself. Romans 8:1, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

By our faith in the crucified and resurrected Jesus god sets us apart from the rest of the world. We are set apart to worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are set apart to live a life dedicated to God and his kingdom. We have been set apart to share the Word of God with others, to show others the love of God and the works of God in our lives.

Wholly; complete and total, with God in our lives we are complete and total. Our spirit and life is complete with the Holy Spirit who resides in every believer. We are complete in the sense that we no longer have to work to please God; through our faith God is as pleased with us as he is with his own son. Through the grace of God we are now total; totally free from the bondage of sin, totally free from God’s wrath and punishment, totally free to take our inheritance, to take possession of heaven as heirs of god with Christ.

“…who was and is and is to come.” The God who created heaven and earth is the same God who walked with Moses and David and Elisha, the same God who sent Jesus to free us from sin, the same God who will open the doors of heaven to all believers. God is the same throughout all time and existence. He does not change his mind. We have peace with God and we can rest in God knowing that through faith in the crucified and resurrected Jesus we are saved for all eternity. What God has made holy will stay holy until the end of all existence and since heaven is forever we will spend all eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus and in the presence of the Most High God.
